This virtual event is a culmination of independent research conducted in various parts of the country and conferences sponsored by the PIIRS Migration Lab: People and Cultures across Borders. It also marks the publication of a book on the same subject that includes articles by several members of our faculty, including Douglas S. Massey, Alejandro Portes, and Patricia Fernandez-Kelly. We may even have copies of the just released volume for you to see. We are proud of this achievement and eager to celebrate in your company.
The event, which is also co-sponsored by the Program in Latino Studies (LAO), will be divided into two parts. In the first hour, Patricia Gandara (UCLA), Roberto Gonzales (Harvard), and Alejandro Portes (Princeton/University of Miami) will deliver short remarks and engage in dialogue among themselves and with those attending. Patricia Fernandez-Kelly will serve as moderator. Between 1:00 and 1:30 PM, we will welcome Ana Obika, director of the FUTURO Program at the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF) and three young immigrants who will share their experiences with us. It's a way to connect with DREAMERS who face an uncertain future but whose testimonies give hope.
