Study of Transnational Immigrant Organizations

The Center has just been awarded a grant under the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Research Competition to initiate a study of transnational immigrant organizations created by Colombian, Dominican, and Mexican immigrants in East Coast cities.  The study will be conducted jointly by CMD director Alejandro Portes and by Cristina Escobar of Temple University.  Escobar, a sociology Ph.D. from the University of California - San Diego, has already completed a detailed study of Colombian immigrant organizations in New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia.  The study will last 18 months.  During this time, an inventory of all transnational organizations created by each immigrant group will be developed and a small sample of representative associations will be selected for intensive study, including visits to the respective home countries.
