The Annual Meeting of the ASA was held in Philadelphia from August 13-16, 2005.  One of the events in which Center Director Alejandro Portes took part was the Author Meets Critic Session for Remaking the American Mainstream:  Assimilation and Contemporary Immigration (Harvard University Press, 2003) by Richard Alba and Victor Nee.  Read his comments here.

On March 16, 2004 Alejandro Portes, along with Tamar Jacoby, editor of the new book Reinventing the Melting Pot (Basic Books 2004), were interviewed by Brian Lehrer concerning immigration and immigrant assimilation.  The show focused on Portes' concept of selective acculturation and its consequences, negative and positive, on the successful integration of the immigrant second generation.
