A recent graduate with a major in sociology, Christina wrote this
manuscript as her senior thesis. By including it in this web page,
we recognize her singular achievement. This is the first in a
series of occasional papers by undergraduate students making
significant contributions to the field of migration and
development.
On the basis of extensive fieldwork, Christina provides a
compelling account of the ties that bind Mesones, a remote Mexican
village, with Princeton, one of the wealthiest American exurbs. Her
superior ethnography is based on 50 interviews in both locations.
This study is the first to examine the effects of transnational
communities on gender and inter-generational relations, and the
first to document the bulk of remittances between Princeton and
Mesones, both matters of importance for scholars and policy makers.
Beyond the Town Limits offers a vivid portrayal of people
on the move. With a sympathetic but cool eye, Christina paints a
canvas as true as life itself and as engaging as the best fiction.
