An Introduction
The Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS) continues to be the largest longitudinal project on the subject of second generation adaptation in the United States. The study was directed by Alejandro Portes of Princeton University and Rubén G. Rumbaut of University of California – Irvine and was supported by research grants from the Russell Sage Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. Data from the first CILS survey, conducted in the spring of 1992, and from the first follow-up and parental survey, both conducted in 1995-96, have been released through this website. The present release is for the second follow-up survey, conducted between 2001 and 2003, when respondents averaged 24 years of age. The CILS-III sample represents 84 percent of the previous follow-up and 69 percent of the original sample. An adjusting equation to correct for sample selectivity is presented in the publications listed below.
The interview schedule for CILS-III focuses on objective outcomes of the adaptation process in early adulthood, including educational attainment, employment status and occupation, personal and family incomes, marital status, childbearing, and incidents of arrest and incarceration. It also includes information on religious affiliation and participation, language proficiency and preference, ethnic self-identity, and political attitudes.
The preparation of this final release was jointly entrusted to William Haller of Clemson University who, as a research associate at Princeton University, served as field director of the South Florida-based segment of the study; Golnaz Komaie and Charlie V. Morgan of University of California – Irvine; and Linda Borgen, who served as field director of the Southern California segment.
